Israeli Conscientious Objectors Speaking Monday, March 24th, Denman Activity Centre/Senior’s Hall from 11:30 am to 1 pm and 7 pm – Stan Hagen Theatre, North Island College
Tal Mitnick and Einat Gerlitz, two Israeli youth jailed for refusing to enlist in the Israeli Occupation Forces, are sharing their stories on a Canada-wide tour sponsored by Independent Jewish Voices Canada, in collaboration with Mesarvot Network, an Israeli initiative supporting young conscientious objectors and elevating their voices in opposition to Israel’s occupation and war crimes.
Mitnick and Gerlitz are leading figures in a growing wave of dissent among Israeli youth, challenging the brutal military occupation and advocating for Palestinian liberation. Both have paid the price for their stand, enduring time in Israeli military prisons for their refusal to participate in what they call a violent system that perpetuates apartheid and genocide. Their actions have sparked a global conversation about the vital role of war resisters in the fight for human rights and a free Palestine.
Serving as moderator for both events will be United Church Minister Keith Simmonds, who spent time in Palestine/Israel as an Ecumenical Accompanier in early 2020– as a direct witness to the ongoing violations of human rights and international law — and who stands in solidarity with those struggling against the Israeli occupation. He currently serves at Campbell River United Church.
In addition to Independent Jewish Voices Canada and Mesarvot, national partners for the “Stories of Resistance” tour are Labour for Palestine, the United Jewish People’s Order, and World Beyond War Canada. The Comox Valley partners and sponsors are Mid-Islanders for Justice & Peace in the Middle East and World Community. In Courtenay, Palestinian Medjool dates, olive oil and za’atar spice will be for sale.
