The World Community Bicycle initiative lives on!

In the Spring of 2009, we shipped a container of nearly 400 donated bicycles and parts to our partner group in Nicaragua, where we are told they have been put to good use.

While realizing we cannot afford to do this again (the shipping costs are prohibitive), we continue to receive donations of used bicycles from folks in the Comox Valley. An integral part of WCB’s mission is “to provide bikes to local low income residents and their children”. There is still much to do to meet this goal. Currently, our group collects, reconditions and donates bicycles to clients of organizations such as the Salvation Army, the Transition Society and Dawn to Dawn. To date, 124 bikes have been distributed to those who cannot afford other means of transport.  Some others have been sold in order to fund the purchase of parts, including fenders and carriers.

World Community Bikes is currently in need of volunteer bicycle mechanics who are able to give any amount of time.  As well, donations of unwanted bikes continue to be solicited, along with helmets, locks and other accessories. We are also looking for a small but secure storage facility in Courtenay where potential recipients can view available bikes.
